Pfieffer Fire update, Big Sur 12/20/13

The fire is now over 90 % contained. Some of the evacuees were to be allowed back today. There have been at least two reports of thefts from fire victims vehicles. That is pretty low. Karma will catch up with thise responsible! Here are two links to keep abreast of things. Kate has a great blog on Big Sur and has tirelessly kept current with the fire status. A community venture to raise funds, support and awareness for the Pfeiffer Ridge fire. This page is a celebration of an incredible community, which is facing immense adversity. This page will disseminate information, raise funds, coordinate efforts, and share the stories of those affected by the fire on Pfeiffer Ridge. Please use this as a source to be in touch with all relief efforts. Our Wild Coast... Wild and Lonely, but never alone. We are in this together. . The Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade's page. Thanks you to all of its members. There is a long road ahead for those who have lost property to the fire. One of the beauties of Big Sur is its community. I have read accounts of those who did lose property, spending their time and efforts helping neighbors defend their homes instead of just grieving their own loss. To all of Big Sur, the firefighters especially, all of you who have jumped in to help those affected, and who will continue to support others through the process of rebuilding and cleanup and everything that come, a BIG THANK YOU.

Big Sur Status update. December 9, 2013

Greetings from South County Big Sur (Jade Country). It has been as cold here the last week as the rest of the central coast. Cold and windy. 12/11/13 Just got notification from Parks Management that fire restrictions have been lifted for camp fires at the developed campgrounds. No mention about other fire restrictions outside developed camping. I checked the forest service website and nothing new there at all. I have been noticing Gray Whales making their southern journey in the last week. The upper vista parking lot at Willow Creek is an awesome spot for whale watching. The Grays seem to move in close to shore here, possibly to feed. Look for them at the northernmost "stack" (rock). They seem to come in right around this point and then work their way around Cape San Martin and along the coastline past Gorda, and the Whale Watcher Cafe. Treebones resort will open again on Saturday 12/14 after their annual closure for general maintenance. I haven't heard of any great scores of Jade. We need the storm window to fully open and give us some good seas to stir things up. A friend did find a nice chunk of clear blue. I got to see it before he lost it out of his pocket! Big time Bummer. All for now. Time to head back off the grid and into Jade Country. Peace, Love and karma to all. Hank

Big Sur Jade Festival 2013 updated 11/2/13

With a lot of work and a little luck, the 2013 Big Sur Jade Festival took place October 11, 12 and 13. The festival had been placed "on hold" after the Federal Government shutdown. The Forest Service campgrounds remained closed, as did the day use areas, which did cause some headaches for attendees, but more smiles than complaints. So Much Jade. This posting is a work in progress. Please chack back for updates.
